So today I had yet another pleasant enconter with Crazy-Willie (nickname, based on the Simpsons' Character "Grounds Keeper Willie"). This man actually IS the groundskeeper of the school. He also happens to be my downstairs neighbour. Other than him, there are no neighbours on the mountain. He has a small dog farm and regularily abuses them. I've been wanting to get a really good video for a long time now to show the world how Koreans treat their animals...but it's hard to get a video of a spontaneous random action.
TODAY, however, Willie got extra mad during a dog-beating when the beating stick became lodged between the floor and the back wall of the kennel and he couldnt' get it unstuck. Uh oh, this was CLEARLY the dog's fault. He tounced off, but I was more than aware that this was not in fact the end of it, so I ran to get my camera. I got back just in time to shoot the following video. Go watch.
[link]As you can see, at the end fo the movie, he notices me! I made no attempt to conceal my video-taping of this. At first, nothing happened for a second. Then he yelled out my name up at my window. I poked my head out in a 'what?' sorta way,but didn't say anything. He started swearing at me in Korean. They have an amazing vocabulary with so many variations on the phrase "son of a bitch". I pride myself on knowing a lot of Korean swears, but this guy even stumped me with smoe of the new ones.
I decided this need not be dealt with, and I simply sat back down. In previous occaisions (for my avid readers, you may remember) I have sworn at him or denounced him. But htis time, I said nothing. I just moved away from the window.
Oh ho ho~! but this was NOT the end of that!
45 seconds later he's in my house! He just walked right in ranting and yelling and continuing his string of various 'son-of-a-bitch'-like insults. Again, I refused to speak to him, to acknowledge him in any verbal form except "get out. ....GET - OUT .... GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" I repeated this very clearly, very decisively (but without yelling) and with the unmistakeable hand guesture over and over.
INSTEAD, he started advancing on me! He backed me into my own bedroom! He feigned a punch!!!!!! He's fucking CRAZY and I'm surprised he didn't in fact hit me!!! Then he started ranting in setnence-form (far to quickly for me to understand amid all the "song of a bitch" continuing yelling), but he provided me with hand guestures as well -- to his dogs, me watching, me taking photos, one I didn't get, then a throat-slitting motion! He left shortly after, THANK - FUCKING - GOD!
This was a few hours ago.
Thankfully a friend was already on her way over before this happened and arrived a few minutes later to comfort me. Even now, I'm shaking all over - not in anger, but in fear. I DO NOT trust this man, and worst of all, he has A KEY to MY HOUSE (which the school stupidly provides for him!).
I phoned a Korean co-teacher...albeit, a young guy (thuslly, powerless), but he actually laughed at my scenario. he said he'd let the VP of the school know.
HE
LAUGHED
AT
MY
SITUATION
So I also emailed my contact in the provincial office of education.
However, given recent events of them telling me I'm simply "not accepting of Korean culture", I'm pretty sure they'll blow this over and chalk it up to being MY fault.
Recently, I finished reading George Orwell's 1984. Have you read it? In the ook, they coin the phrase "double-think". If you don't know it, go read here
[link]Now, this is the perfect example of doublethink. Crazy-Willie is super-pissed at me for filming him because he KNOWS he's done something extremely disgusting, BUT, usng the power of double-think, that is not so at all. Instead, it is my fault for haivng caught him.
Korea is full of these such doble-think scenarios.
Anothersuch example follows in the continuing saga of struggle with corporal punishment.
I went and had a discussion with the co-teacher who wrote the evaluation of me to the board of education. I explained the problem was that there was a lack of specificity (is that a word?); that he needed to say the EXACT problems with "korean culture" not just glossing over it in a broad generalization.
He disagreed. He thought it was not relevant.
I explained again WHY it IS relevant and how his lack of specific complaints will lead to me being placed in a school equally problematic, if not more so.
He still didn't see any reason to do so. "If they ask, I will tell them" he said,
I told him no. He will do it right now.
He said no.
I told him that I think he won't do it because he's ASHAMED. That he finds it very shaming that the foreigner can't deal with this barbaric behavior. That's why he refuses to tell them the SPECIFIC problem.
He disagreed.
I restated my point.
In the end, the arguement went nowhere as he gave in and said "okay!". He actually phoned the office, but managed to somehow make them believe I was upset about another issue (as opposed to clarifying my anger at the PAST issue). Whatever.
In the Korean line of thought, they DO know they've done something wrong and they ARE ashamed of it, that's why he refuses to state the issue SPECIFICALLY. HOWEVER, it can be easily chopped up to "Korean Culture" and therefor my fault enitrely for disagreeing with him. Not only am I in the wrong, I'm in the BAD. I'm classified as BAD for disagreeing with a things so precious as their "culture".
needless to say. I'm getting out of this negativity-hole soon!
Once my contract is up, I'm outa that school, outa this house, and hopefully off somewhere much better! ...still not sure exactly where, but it's nice to know that the whole world is at my fingertips, I just have to make up my mind and go!
Removing that video has taken away the possibility for debate and acceptance of the fact that this DOES exist and DOES happen in Korea. Fact: the dog was barking noisily. Fact: the dog was defenseless and barred in. Fact: the dog was beaten with a pole to quieten it. Fact: in other countries that is considered animal abuse, and some people in Korea also do agree with that definition. Fact: there are some people who completely misconstrue, misunderstand the point.
That is infuriating, exasperating and most of all, unfortunate for the girl as to the denial she holds strongly to.

At any rate, Google-video (far less popular) still allows iton their site
That guy is scary. >_<

Did my post get you all worked up and you want to reply with RAGE? Read this first: [link]
So I figure, if anyone knows George Orwell, it's you (you're such an avid reader!), and wondered if my description of doublethink was properly as accurate as I thought?
